Definition Of Clause

Clause

Clause is a group of words that divided into 2, independent clause and dependent clause.

A. Adjective Clause
         Adjective clause is a sub clause which is the function to modifine noun.
     - Who is a subject pronoun refer to people.
        e.g: The man is friendly. He lives next to me.
              = The man who lives next to me is friendly.
     - Whom is an object pronoun refer to people.
        e.g: The woman was friendly. I met her.
             = The woman whom I met was friendly.
      - Which is a subject pronoun refer to things.
        e.g: The house is small. It is clean and tidy.
             = The house which is clean and tidy is small.
      - Which is an object pronoun refer to things.
         e.g: The car was old. I bought it.
              = The car which I bought was old.
      - Whom+preposition
         e.g: The boy is handsome. She falls in love with him.
              = The boy whom she falls in love with is handsome.
      - Which+preposition
         e.g: The table is hard. My father is sitting on it.
              = The chair which my father is sitting on is hard.
                 The chair on which my father is sitting is hard
      - Whose shows possession.
        e.g: The man called the police. His house was robbed.
             = The man whose house was robbed called the police.

B. Noun Clause
       A noun clause is a dependent clause and cannot stand alone as a sentence. It must be connected to an independent clause (a main clause). Sub clause is divided into 2:
     1. Information Clause
         e.g: What did he say? I didn't hear what he said
     2. Yes/No Question
         e.g: Can you tell me if/whether my hair looks alright?

C. Adverbial Clause
          Conjunctions which begin the clause
     1. Time: after, before, as, once, since, until, when, whenever, while
         e.g: I wait him until he comes and sees me.
     2. Place: where, wherever
         e.g: She will follow wherever he goes.
     3. Manner: as, as if
         e.g: I will do as she said.
     4. Condition: if, unless
         e.g: I will come to her house if my parents permit it.
     5. Reason and cause: because, since, as
         e.g: Since you have already studied that chapter, it will not be necessary to read it again.
     6. Result: so....that, such.......that/such that
         e.g: The car is so fast that I can't see it
     7. Comparison: as, than
         e.g: She sings better than he does.
